We performed a deep retrofit and upgrade of this mid-century Oakland Hills house to bring it firmly into the 21st century.
We enlarged and remodeled the bathroom into an oasis featuring floor-to-ceiling limestone tile, a curb-less shower, Japanese soaking tub, and a custom floating vanity and medicine cabinet made from old-growth Douglas Fir salvaged from the floor joists of another century-old Oakland home.
The new kitchen, which we enlarged after removing the old masonry chimney from the house, graciously opens to the dining room with its bay views. The light in the late afternoon really makes the bamboo cabinets glow!
We did a full upgrade of all mechanical, electrical and plumbing utilities in the house. We removed the gas service and fully electrified the house, including installing a high-efficiency heat pump HVAC system, a heat pump water heater, and an induction cooktop in the kitchen.
We also performed a voluntary seismic retrofit to strengthen the home’s original structural elements.
