OREGON ADU

This ADU is one part of a larger project transforming a south Berkeley bungalow into a multi-generational family compound.  Designed alongside an addition and remodel to the existing main house, our plan adds two accessible bedroom suites to the larger home, while also expanding and enhancing the shared spaces where the three generations can gather.

The building’s metal cladding and polished concrete floor provide a durable space for this family of rock climbers who enjoy tinkering, painting, and gardening. Clerestory windows illuminate the interior of the large flex space, which opens onto the garden via level-entry through a ten foot wide folding Nanawall door.

White oak accents throughout the interior are inspired by the owners' affinity for summer vacations in France, while the soapstone kitchen countertop is a reflection of the owners' scientific vocation.

The ADU is fully electric and highly efficient, featuring a compact induction cooktop and a high-efficiency Mitsubishi heat pump.
